How do I prepare for my exam?

If you are DIABETIC, please call (636) 922.5151 or toll free (866) 922.7382 for special pre-testing instructions.

The day BEFORE your scan/test:
1. Eat a high protein/low carbohydrate diet (eat eggs, bacon, vegetables, meat, cheese -     limit breads, cereals, pastas)
2. Drink 6-8 glasses of water.
3. No exercise for 2 day before your exam.

The day OF the scan/test:
1. NOTHING to eat or drink 4 hours before exam.
2. NO cough drops, gum, breath mints, candy, etc.
3. Drink more water - just plain tap water - to stabilize your blood sugar and keep     hydrated.
4. Upon arrival, your blood sugar level will be checked. If out of range, your scan may be     cancelled and rescheduled.
5. Avoid caffeine.
6. Arrive ON TIME - the FDG pharmaceutical (testing material) used is costly and expires     within 2 hours of your injection time. You may be charged for wasted doses.
7. Bring any CT and MRI films and CDs.
8. Wear warm comfortable clothing.
9. Bring your photo ID, driver's license and insurance cards.

Actual scan/test procedure:
• Plan to spend 2 1/2 to 3 hours at the center.
• After check-in, paperwork, pre-testing questions, and blood sugar stick, you have to   rest comfortably and quietly in a Lazy Boy chair for 90 minutes while the radioactivity   has a chance to circulate and be absorbed by your body. (Electric blankets are available   to insure your warmth and comfort during the uptake period. You are welcome to bring   your favorite music CD.)
• Next, you will be asked to empty your bladder.
• Then, you will rest on the scanning table, with arms propped above your head, for   approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on your height, weight, and areas of special   interest.
• The technologist will attempt to make you as comfortable as possible, while getting   the best possible pictures for the study. IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY DISCOMFORT, YOU   CAN CALL US, VIA MICROPHONE SYSTEM. The technologist is just a call away. You are   always in the line of sight of the technologist and staff.
• Once scan/test is complete, you are free to leave, after being invited to have some   snacks and drinks.

After the scan/test:
1. Drink more water. Even though the radioactivity leaves your body quickly, it is always     good to flush the system as soon as possible.
2. Your referring physician should have a report within 2 business days.
